Vehicle safety is an area of increasing importance, which must be continuously developed to prevent more people being injured in traffic. The market will grow faster than car manufacturing as a whole, but it is mainly active safety that contributes to this development. For the Swedish automotive industry, safety is a very important area and the challenge is to maintain and develop that position in the future.

Every year, up to 1.3 million people die in traffic, and between 20 and 50 millions are injured. A lot of them are scarred for life. Car manufacturers, subcontractors and authorities have worked for increased safety with good results but development must continue.

In car-dense, industrialized countries, traffic accidents are still a major problem that causes great suffering and significant social costs. In addition, the situation is worse in developing markets, where most of the traffic victims are located and where car use is growing explosively.

One challenge, therefore, is that the level of security that exists today in Europe, the United States and Japan is also established in the markets where car density is increasing. Another challenge, which is also important for mature markets, is to move beyond the traditional “passive” safety systems such as seat belts and airbags. To further reduce the number of accidents and reduce mortality – which are expressed political goals in Sweden and the EU – requires more cars to be equipped with “active” systems, i.e. systems that reduce the risk of an accident.

This study treats vehicle safety as a growth area, with a particular focus on on active safety in passenger cars. The study is based on a global market perspective with the aim of highlighting driving forces, market scope, market potential and the actors who create and shape the market. The aim has been to describe the global market and then analyze what roles and ambitions Swedish companies have in the area.
